Activities of the Sports Medicine and Shoulder Service

I would just like to give you an update of some of our recent activities, and tell you a little bit about the general direction we are heading in.

Shoulder Exam

We have done a number of studies to define which clinical tests are useful for diagnosing shoulder problems. Many clinical tests have been found to to be redundantand I am pleased to say that the shoulder examination is much easier and quicker to perform.

Shoulder Update 2006

Clavicle Fractures

A recent study in Perth has shown significant functional impairment when clavicle fractures are allowed to heal with overlap, i.e. with the shoulder internally rotated.

Recommendation

Don't use a traditional sling when treating clavicle fractures - use a well fitted figure of eight brace.
